New Moms..Stay at home!!

Hi everyone! I am still here, down in sweltering Miami. I check up on everyone very often, but am very busy with my 3 kiddos... speaking of kiddos, I just have to respond to Clare's blog about new moms returning to work. I personally struggled with the issue of career woman vs. mom, and "why can't I have it all?" I used to say things like I am going to do what I want to do and "nothing, not even a baby, is going to stand in my way." I used to think that the lectures that my grandma would give me about the "sacrifices" I should make to stay at home with my kids because it was best for them were so "old fashioned". I looked down upon my own Mom, who stayed at home with us and did not have a career.

While I was dating my now-husband, I began to think about the future, raising children, and my career path. After MUCH soul-searching, I realized this: like it or not, I am a woman. Therefore, I bear the children if we choose to do so. As a woman, I, personally, am a nurturing, loving, mothering human being. If I choose to raise a family by bearing children, one of the two will suffer: my career or my children. I am an achiever, and like to be successful in my endeavors. I had to choose. Which was more important to me? My future children, or my career? I chose my children. I do have a job. I work night-shift on the weekends as an RN so that my husband can stay with my kids. Do I enjoy working 7pm-7am on a Saturday night? Absolutely not- but, grandma, I now understand what you meant by making "sacrifices" for your children. I also highly respect my Mom for staying home with us.. believe me it AIN'T EASY!!!! (ask my husband- he did it last week for 5 days and couldn't wait to get back to work)

I applaud women who have made names for themselves in the workplace. I don't think every woman should be a stay-at-home mom. I love that I was given the choice to pursue a career or raise children, and I have those women at the top to thank.

I understand that some women don't have a choice whether or not to stay home. It scares me to death to see women being rewarded, actually PROMOTED, for taking shorter maternity leaves. We should be moving in the opposite direction!! Families should be supported in the workplace with LONGER paid maternity leaves, on-site childcare, breastfeeding rooms, etc. I believe, and this may piss some people off, that if you are not willing to let anything stand in your way in order to advance your career, "not even a baby", then you shouldn't have a baby!!! Go for it, girl! Pursue your career all the way to the top! But please don't bring a child into this world that you don't want to "stop you from doing what you want to do."

So, Clare, I guess I answered your question, rather vehemently I suppose, "how do women today handle their career and motherhood?" I felt the answers you were given were rather one-sided, and I felt I had to put a few words in for those 24/7 moms who never seem to get enough credit.

I'm still here!!

Ok- I know it has been awhile- but I have kept up with the site, the fashion, and the friends with sneak-peeks between changing diapers, picking up toys, potty training, dealing with tantrums, getting kids to kindergarten (I have to get my 3 kids, my 7-year-old neighbor, my dog, and myself fed, dressed and out the door by 7:30 AM! And I am not a morning person!!!!), and trying to stay somewhat sane(wine helps alot). I have been watching, and I love the fall clothes. If I had to pick a favorite (a hard thing to do), I would choose the Alice & Trixie "Angel" Top. OMG, it is so beautiful. What a great top to brighten a cold, damp winter day, or to wear while sipping margaritas on your winter getaway. I have to have it!!!

PS- Has anyone noticed my football team is ranked number 2 in the country? Jim?!
PSS- Had to throw in a pic of my youngest- 7 months old already!!

Yummy Summer Cocktail

Hi Jennifer- I saw that you were asking for summer drink recipes. Being a mom of 3, I need summer drinks to stay sane!! That being said, I have been clipping recipes recently that I have been meaning to try. The one that looks most refreshing is from Martha Stewart Living- it is called Honey Ruby Red Grapefruitade. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients

Makes 7 1/2 cups; serves 6 to 8

  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 6 cups fresh Ruby Red grapefruit juice, strained (from about 6 grapefruits)
  • 2 cups sparkling rose, chilled (optional)

Directions

  1. Bring honey and water to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring to combine. Remove from heat, and let cool.
  2. Combine juice and honey syrup in a pitcher. (Or cover, and refrigerate for up to 3 days.) Add rose to pitcher. Divide juice among ice-filled glasses.

Helpful Hint

Any honey can be used for this drink, but wildflower honey adds a nuanced flavor that is slightly floral.

Coming Back to Earth...

Hi everyone! I know it seems I've fallen off the face of the planet- and mentally, I sort of have, but life is settling in finally! I do know that having 3 kids under 5 is the hardest thing I've ever done, but they sure are great and make us smile. Here is a pic from mother's day weekend- we were on vacation in the panhandle of Florida. (we braved a 10-hour drive with the 3 kids)

I have been keeping tabs of the site and the blogs- congrats on getting Best of Madison! How many years in a row have you gotten the award?

Great clothes, also!! Love the breezy styles!

Hooray for Billy!

I am so excited to see more Billy Blues in What's New- I am such a fan of this designer. The fit is always perfect. Billy Blues is definitely my "reach for" shorts on hot days in Miami when I am busy toting kids to preschool, play-dates, or coffee with friends. Comfy but stylish, Billy Blues always keeps up with my hectic life!!

PS- In case you were wondering, I am the oddball that posted a picture of my turkey at Thanksgiving- it was a work of art!! ; )

Thanks!

Hi everyone! Thanks for all of the congratulations- we are very blessed to have welcomed Casey Marie on March 5. She weighed in at a healthy 8lb 3oz, 20in long. She is a very sweet baby, and fits right in with our family! Here is a picture of her doing what she likes to do best- sleep!
Anyway, we are right back in the swing of things, and my next goal is to fit back into my clothes and buy some new items as well. I love all the NEW spring items, as well as older warm weather items that are on sale. Even if I am walking around like a zombie from lack of sleep, I still like to look great. I may not have time for a shower, but I always have time for fashion! : )

Green with Envy!

Wow, Amanda! I am going to live vicariously through you from now on! While I am attending to my newborn, 2-year-old, and 5-year-old, I would love to read all of the juicy details from your travels. I don't know how fancy the party is, but to make an elegant-but-edgy statement I would recommend the Sky "Halter Chain" Dress! Good luck, and be sure to fill us in on who you saw, what you ate, what you drank, etc!

Post-Baby Clothes

Well, we are officially on baby-watch. Our third little girl could arrive any day now! I am so excited to get back into some J. Lamore clothes! The winter weather in Miami is perfect for all of the new items cropping up on the site. (warm and breezy) If I had to pick a favorite outfit, it would be the Miss Me "Jean Knee" Shorts paired with the Susana Monaco "Pleated Urban Crew" Top. I know I would fit right in wearing this outfit strolling around South Beach, or meeting some girlfriends at an outdoor cafe!

Hot Mama

I am knee-deep preparing for our new baby (only 2-4 weeks left to go) and taking care of the kids I already have... but I always have time for a little shopping online! I am seeing so many great items at jlamore.com that I can't wait to get my hands on! Oh, to be back in my Immortality jeans with a Susana Monaco top! Take it from Victoria Beckham- you CAN be the mother of 3 and still be hot. With jlamore.com as my source for a great wardrobe, it is only a matter of time......

Appreciating the warmth!

Okay- while I usually am craving some winter weather by this time of year (believe it or not it is possible to get sick of 80 degree temps year-round), I am definitely NOT envious of the weather that much of the country is getting right now. Negative-digit weather does not sound appealing at all, and makes me appreciate walking around in shorts and sandals! Those people who were brave enough to go to Lambeau Field last night are crazy in my book! I think even if I were Brett Favre, I would've said, "Um, no thanks.. too cold for me!!" I love ya, Brett, but maybe you should have stayed home based on the final score of the game!!!

But I digress- if I were in the frozen tundra that you all are experiencing, I would love to look great with some jlamore.com items keeping me warm! For example, the Urchin "Charcoal Cardigan" Sweater with Twisted Heart "Heart Break" T shirt underneath would feel so toasty with a pair of Union "Goddess Cord" Pants. Now that would look HOT when the weather is COLD!

T-shirt and Jeans Girl...

On the weekdays, I am a T-shirt and jeans kind of girl- I love it when I find a T-shirt that is not so boring! I love the ruffle detail on the collar of this Blake Standard shirt, and the color is so versatile- wear it with black or blue jeans now, and white jeans in the spring!

Great holiday items

AAAAGGHHH! Being pregnant this holiday season and seeing all that jlamore.com has to offer is KILLING me!! Every day when I go to my closet, I forlornly look at all of my jlamore.com items, sigh, then pull out the old trusty maternity jeans! Oh, well. This will be the LAST time I am going through this, so I am going to save all the money I would have spent and have a shopping spree as soon as I'm back to my old weight. I especially love this Urchin "Red Lurex" Sweater.. It is SO ME! Casual, yet a classy standout. Everyone enjoy the wide assortment of fabulous items from jlamore.com, because, trust me, it is hard to look but not be able to purchase!

I Love Billy!

I love the comfort, ease, and versatility of pants and shorts made by Billy Blues. These "5 Pocket Boot Cut" Pants are no exception- great for weekend shopping trips or casual dinner with friends. Throw them on with a sweater or a tank top in warmer climates. I personally love them with the Qi Cashmere "Waffle Knit" Cardigan.

Happy Halloween!

Sounds like everyone had a great Halloween weekend! Our main event (trick-or-treating) may be cancelled because of Tropical Storm Noel.. we'll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, here is a pic of my daughter, Emily, dressed up for her Halloween parade at preschool. I'll post one of the Anna after tomorrow night.

PS- I agree with all the friends regarding the Whiting & Davis clutches- when I am lucky enough to be out without a diaper bag, I want to carry something small that is big on style. These clutches fit the bill!

Great New Product!

Being a busy mom of two (with one on the way), I am always on the lookout for beauty products that I can pick up at the grocery store that are inexpensive but still feel luxurious. I just picked up the Dove Ultra Rich Cream Oil Body Wash and I love it! It really does leave your skin feeling soft and smooth all day, and I can usually skip the after-shower lotion. (a plus when I'm trying to rush out the door to carpool to preschool) Additionally, it smells great and the big bottle will last forever. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed, and with drier air settling across the country this fall and winter, your skin will benefit!

Halloween Plans...

Hi Julie- to answer your question about Halloween, at our house, it's all about the kids! This year, my precious girls are going to be none other than University of Alabama cheerleaders! I will post some pictures after the big day. We usually do a progressive party with some other families where we start out at one person's house for wine, appetizers, and, of course, lots of pictures of the little ones. Then we trick-or-treat to the next person's house for a bowl of chili, more wine, and more pictures! Finally, we trick-or-treat to the last person's house to examine the kids' goodie bags and enjoy some dessert! (and more wine, of course) It ends up being a fun night for the whole family!! Happy Halloween!

PS- By the way, we found out we are having ANOTHER girl- watch out J. LaMore when they become teenagers!

Art, Anyone?

If you are at all interested in art, you may find the following funny (like I did): Earlier this week at South Beach's Sagamore Hotel, 500 peoples showed up to be photographed nude by New York artist Spencer Tunick. This photo shows more than 100 women on more than 100 pink rafts floating nude in the hotel pool! The article in the Miami Herald, Hundreds bare all for art in Miami Beach, states, "There was a surreal quality to the day: strip the folks who populate one of the sexiest locales in the world of their designer labels and shades and all the cultural signifiers that suggest they're hip, or well off, or taking a stand against this or that, and what you have left is almost transcendental. You have just the body." Check out the article. Only in Miami!!!

Max update...

Just wanted to update you on Max: she is currently 9 months pregnant and getting very close to delivery!! (and still looking great, I might add) She is going to have another little girl... I will definitely let you know when Miss Molly arrives! She still reads the blog frequently and misses participating in the website- I think that when her life settles down a bit she will be back.

PS- She is probably going to kill me for posting this picture!!

Great Recipes...

To answer my own Sunday afternoon question- today I am lounging in my Twisted Heart sweats and cooking a big pot of Paula Deen's The Lady's Chicken Noodle Soup and a batch of Herb Cornbread. I have two sick kids and I never underestimate the medicinal properties of chicken noodle soup! Check out the recipes- they're delicious!!! Great to get you through cold season, or just a cool fall evening.

Great Jeans at a Great Price!

Not only do I love the look of the Miss Me "Belgium" Jeans, I love the price! Very rarely will you find such good quality jeans under $100! As I'm always preaching: Save money, buy great jeans!! (they will last lots longer, allowing you to avoid buying over and over again) These are a unique pair with the pony fur pocket and worn look.
